This year, we will post on our website the many activities with which students can become involved at Mary Johnston P.S. We ask parents to encourage and support their children becoming involved at school. Please note that there are many other staff members who are helping with the activities. The names you see are the contacts for the activities.  If you or your child is looking for additional information about (or assistance with) signing up for an activity please feel free to speak with your child’s homeroom teacher.

Running Club (Mrs. Ross) (Grades 3-6) – Mondays and Wednesdays during the First half of the first nutrition break. Students will be running around the boundaries of the school. – September 16 – October 3

Junior Intramurals (Mr. Ryan and Mr. Howard) (Grades 4-6) – Daily during one of the nutrition breaks – September and October

Recycling Club (Mrs. Murdoch) – (Grades 4-6) – Every Thursday during the second nutrition break

MJ Fun Run (Mr. Howard) (Grades 3-6) – Thursday, October 10 – 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. at MJ

Gnomes Sewing Club (Madele Tosi) (Grade 3-6) – September 17 – December 12 – every Day 1, 3, 4 during the first half of the second nutrition break.

Primary Intramurals (Miss Teeter) – First Nutrition Breaks (times to follow)  Come on out! Grades 1,2 and 3 students have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of sports, cooperative games and movement activities to keep them focused and engaged! Activities may take place in the school gymnasium OR outside.

PALS Program (Mrs. Schatz) – (Grade 5 and 6 student leaders) – These students will run some fun cooperative games for grade 1 and 2 students once a week.

Lunchroom Helpers – (Grade 5 and 6 students) – The students will be placed in a primary classroom during the eating portion of the nutrition breaks. The students will help open thermos or packaging when the young children have difficulty opening them. The students may rotate on a monthly basis to provide opportunity for others, if needed.

Office Helpers (Mrs. Weir) – (Grade 5 and 6 students) – Students need to apply for the position by completing a registration form AND obtaining a reference from their teacher. Successful candidates will be given a schedule as to when they help during one of the nutrition breaks.

Announcement Helpers (Mrs. Weir) – (Grade 5 and 6 students) – Students need to apply for the position by completing a registration form AND obtaining a reference from their teacher. Successful candidates will be given a schedule as to when they are to do announcements.

Friends Club (Mr. Heipel) – (Grade 5 and 6 students) – Student may sign up for one nutrition break a week to come to the Developmentally Challenged classroom (A4) to work and play with the students in the classroom.

Science Club (Dara Gilbert and Thorsten Diekmann- Parents) – (Grades 3-6) – Science club will resume on Tuesdays in November. Children in grades 3-6 are eligible to participate. The club will meet at school from 3:30 to 4:30. The activities will include experiments and discussions in many scientific fields, including chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, earth and environmental sciences. All the experiments will be well supervised and safe. Dara Gilbert and Thorsten Dieckmann will run the club with help from teachers and volunteers.

Choir (Mlle Moola, Mlle Hein, Miss Teeter, Madele Tosi) – Choir will begin during the week of October 15th. All students will be able to sign up andparticipatee in preparation for a holiday concert in December.

Home Reading (Heather Hickey – Parent) – (Grades JK-3) Home Reading program provides opportunities for students in grades 1-3 to sign out a book each day in order for you and/or your child to read to one another at home in the evenings. The number of times you read to your child are tracked and once your child reads for 100 nights, s/he receive a recognition award for his/her accomplishment.
