CALLING ALL MJ STUDENTS!!!

Here is your chance to participate in Mary Johnston PS’s
S.T.E.A.M. FAIR
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Fair)

What is it? A voluntary, extra-curricular event that gives students a chance to have fun preparing and presenting a project for their fellow students, friends and family.
When and where is it?
● Wednesday, April 4th, 2018, from 6:30-8:00pm – family, friends, community members are welcome
● In the school gym
● Students can view the exhibits with their classes during the school day on April 4th

Who can participate?
● ALL students from JK through grade 6
● Each student participates at their own level – enthusiasm and a desire to learn are the essential requirements!
● Primary students are strongly encouraged to join in the fun and start early in building a love for learning and developing skills for interacting with others in a creative environment.

How does it work?
● Students choose a topic from any of the four areas: science, technology, engineering, or math (or, a project that involves more than one of these areas!)
● Projects are completed outside of school hours – no classroom time will be provided.
● A display board will be provided for each student.
● Family/adult assistance is allowed, at an appropriate level for the child’s age and ability. For example, parents or others might: help brainstorm or
select ideas; supervise or assist in gathering information and materials from libraries, internet, etc; help in carrying out an experiment; assist in
constructing an invention; help with assembling the display (including helping with writing and spelling for the youngest students); aid in
transporting the project to and from school.
● The STEAM Fair is a non-competitive event – each student’s participation will be recognized, and the reward is in the enjoyment of the project,
feeling proud of the work, and having fun the evening of the fair!
● A volunteer “judge” will visit each project to give students a chance to officially present their work and answer some questions about it – this is
meant to be a positive experience and “judges” are kind!

Why should I participate?
● Mostly because it’s FUN!
● Build thinking skills, increase knowledge, develop research and STEAM skills
● Think creatively, use problem-solving
● Practise presentation skills, build confidence
● Experience planning and follow through of ideas to a completed project
● Explore topics that are uniquely interesting and exciting them
● Foster love of learning and creativity
● Early exposure to the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math
● See role models of other students invested in learning and presenting their work

So where do I sign up?!?!
● Registration forms will be sent home in the near future (2-3 weeks)
● To sign up, fill out the registration form, including topic or title of project
● Registration form is returned to school (to teach or office)
