EQAO is well underway! Our grade 6 students have completed their portion of the assessment and are now looking forward to Grade 6 Camp. Grade three students will write their EQAO assessment beginning today and ending June 1st. June 5th has been set aside as a finish up day for any students who missed part of the assessment. We are all proud of our students; they have approached this task in the most positive manner.

MJ Track and Field for our Junior students will be this Wednesday for the full day! Be sure to send your child with the appropriate clothing and a good sized water bottle. Thanks.

Grade 6 Camp – On June 7, 8 and 9th, our students and teachers will head up to SilverLake Mennonite camp for three days and two nights. We can’t wait to spend our time hiking, playing, swimming, investigating, learning, inquiring and celebrating! Be sure to watch us on Twitter.

Volunteers – please save the date, June 13th. You are invited to the MJ library so that we can thank you and celebrate the work you do to make MJ such a GREAT place. Please register here: https://goo.gl/forms/66yYoWWmgKZkZBbE3

Dress Code

Students are expected to dress in a manner which is respectful, neat, clean, tidy, and not offensive to other students and staff.

Here are the guidelines to follow when getting dressed for school:

Leave beachwear: flip flops, bare bellies, or strapless tops/dresses for the beach (proper sandals make running at nutrition break safe)

As you can see, we do not have a specific strap size for tops, but expect that all tops have straps!

Check that your shorts are properly covering your bottom, are not ripped or frayed and do not wear revealing yoga shorts (or wear your yoga shorts under a skirt)

Do not wear shirts with obscenities, racial comments, obscene pictures, alcohol or tobacco-related products.

Remember that the air conditioning can be cool inside, it’s always good to have a sweater/jacket in your back-pack!

Safe, Caring and Inclusive Schools- From “Be Involved” chapter:

Online Behaviour

Some children and teens prefer their parents not use the latest shortcuts [when they text]. One child explained: “When my parents try to text like my friends and I, it’s like they’re turning into someone else. It gets confusing.”

“I actually like it when my mom texts in full sentences. It makes me feel safe because I know it’s her. That’s the way she talks.” – Tween

Find a balance between respecting your children’s privacy while at the same time keeping them safe. Take the time to talk to your children about why you might want to know passwords and see the profiles and posts of friends.

… Be prepared to say no to your children participating in a social media site if you feel they are not yet ready to participate safely.

…Let them know that what is shared on social media often spreads very quickly. Would they share that comment, photo or video with an auditorium full of their peers? What if someone could keep a record of their text or photo and share it with others?

MJ parent says: Let your children know that when they share secrets with a trusted friend by text that friend may very well have another person that they trust.  So, very quickly your child’s “private” text could get passed from person to person.  Encourage your child to share private thoughts through oral communication – not in writing.

Some of our older students have talked about watching the Netflix show ’13 Reasons why. There is some mature content in the show that could cause your child to have many questions or concerns. Please click the link to view the WRDSB’s guidance for parents:  Response to 13 Reasons Why
